Using Sign Language with babies

Using sign language with your child:

  • Increases communication skills

  • Supports earlier language development

  • Reduces overall frustration & miscommunication

  • Helps brain development as babies make connections between words/actions and meaning

Pick a few signs start with 3-5 that are most useful to your daily routines

Say the word as your sign will help your baby associate the word and gesture

Be consistent Use the same signs every time in the same context ex. sign “all done” when finishing an activity

Begin introducing signs around 6 months:

During play: signs to introduce: ball, book, play

While eating: signs to introduce: more, all done, eat

Anytime: signs to introduce: mommy, daddy, diaper
