Attention is the foundation of learning.
A child needs to obtain some level of sustained attention to follow a direction. Following directions helps a child learn, stay safe, and achieve social expectations. Focus attention on a book, toy, puzzle, or favorite toy first.
A child must know the item first, but if you know they do, then you can begin working on item identification.
Pointing to items (animals, people, objects) in books. Flip books are always engaging and fun for a child.
Pick up puzzle pieces (Where is the cow piece?)
Find favorite items from 2-3 options laid out on the floor or in a box.
Once a child can sustain attention, begin to work on 1-step directions. These can be completed anywhere, but focus on DAILY ROUTINES (bath, meal, or bedtime). Be simple and direct!
-Sit here.
-Put toys away
-Take off your shoes.
-Grab your jacket.
Once your child can follow 1-step directions, start practicing multi step directions. These will help them throughout their childhood; these are part of daily home and classroom routines.
Get the ball and give it to me
Close the drawer and turn off the light
Get your coat and bookbag
