Receptive language is a child’s ability to understand words and directions, which is a fundamental part of learning and overall communication

Understanding Location words Purpose:

Improves the ability to follow directions and understand position words (on, in under, above, next to, in front etc.)

Activities to try at home:

  • Hide and seek with toys and label where they are “teddy is under the table”

  • Play “Simon Says” using location words, “Stand next to the chair.”

  • Point out objects in a book, “Where is the cat?” Lying on the bed

Recognizing Size Concepts

Purpose:

Helps with comparison, sorting, and understanding attributes of objects

Activities to try at home:

  • Compare toys or household items. “Which ball is big? Find the small spoon.”

  • During snack time, ask your child to pick the biggest/smallest piece of food

  • Go on a walk and have them find objects that are big, small, tall, or short.
