Model Two-Word Phrases
Children learn by hearing! Use SHORT, SLOW, & CLEAR phrases
Child says: “dog”
You say: “big dog” or “dog running
Child says: “up”
You say: “Go up” or “Up please”
Add One word
Adding one more word, show your child how to combine words into short, meaningful phrases.
Cup ---> “Want cup” Cup ---> “Blue cup”
Eat ---> “Eat Banana”
Eat ---> “Eat more ”
Go ---> “Go outside”
Go ---> “Go car” Adding
one more word adds so much more meaning
Use Daily Routines
Common Routines & What to say Bath time
“wash hands”
“more bubbles”
“splash water”
Leaving the house
“bye-bye mama”
“open door”
“shoes on”
There are so many more opportunities
Follow Their Routine
When you talk about what interests your child (cars, blocks, or stuffies, etc.), they are more likely to listen, learn, and try new words.
If your child is playing with a truck:
Verbal model:
“truck fast”
“help truck”
“go truck”
If your child is playing with bubbles:
Verbal model:
“more bubbles”
“pop bubbles”
“bubbles up”
Repettition is Key
Children learn language through hearing the same words over and over in natural situations.
-Use the same two-word phrases across a variety of activities
-Read favorite books repeatedly
-Sing songs and rhymes that repeat words “Wheels on the Bus”
